b. Abstract (English)

This book collects the personal commentaries of the eminent hadith master and historian Shams al-Din al-Dhahabi (673–748 AH), which he scattered throughout his monumental biographical work Siyar Aʿlam al-Nubalaʾ, usually introduced by his well-known phrase "I say" (qultu). The compiler surveyed the entire work, excluded remarks limited to authenticating or criticizing narrators or correcting death dates, and retained those offering practical insight into creed, law, and ethics.

The book opens with a biography of al-Dhahabi covering his lineage, upbringing, travels in pursuit of knowledge, teaching posts, scholarly reputation, and major works. It then arranges his commentaries in eighteen chapters: following the Sunnah and love of the Prophet (peace be upon him); the transmission and classification of hadith and the necessity of combining hadith with jurisprudence; the merits of the four Imams and warnings against anomalous opinions; questions of creed, the Prophetic biography, and the ʿUthmanic codex and Quranic readings; the standing of the Companions and spiritual refinement; preserving fellowship despite differences between schools; the ethics of scholarship, miscellaneous legal questions, and Islamic manners; narrator criticism and the conduct of rulers; and finally a legal-theoretical question on whether Zahiri dissent counts.

The conclusion highlights al-Dhahabi's fairness, moderation, respect for scholars, and courteous approach to disagreement, making the book an accessible introduction to the thought of one of Islam's foremost scholars
